Gold Beach, Oregon

Just 176 miles south of Newport is Gold Beach, Oregon. We made reservations at Turtle Rock RV Resort just south of the town of Gold Beach. Turtle Rock Resort is a Good Sam with full hook-ups and access to the beach with a Mexican Restaurant on site called Tortuga. Great Margaritas and food and super convenient too!

The rock behind Rick and Gus is called Turtle Rock. Can you see the shape of a turtle?

During our stay, we took a jetboat ride down the Rogue River. We booked this adventure through Jerry’s Rogue River Tours. We took the Express Whitewater Excursion which is a 4.75-hour tour with lunch provided. We enjoyed this 80-mile round trip jet boat ride but next time we’ll bring a rain jacket, not because of the weather but because the boat Skipper loves to get his passengers all wet. It was a fun fast ride through white water rapids.

The City of Gold Beach sits just south of the Rogue River, about 40 miles north of the California state line.

The section of this coastline received its name after placer miners discovered gold in the sands near the mouth of the Rogue River in 1853. The town, initially named Ellensburg, was incorporated in 1853.

On March 25, 1890, The Ellensburg postmaster changed the name of the post office to Gold Beach to avoid confusion with Ellensburg, Washington. The name of the city officially changed to Gold Beach on January 23, 1891

Time to hit the road, next stop Eureka California.
