San Carlos, Baja California Sur

Puerto San Carlos is a small fishing community facing the Pacific Ocean. We arrived on February 1, 2022, at a hotel called Mar Y Arena which is on the shores of Magdalena Bay.

We had booked a Get-A-Way 2 night package. We stayed in a hotel room and parked our motorhome and jeep in their parking lot. The package included a 3 hour private whale tour.

February and March are prime times to see the beautiful Grey Whale. The Grey Whales make their 6,800-mile journey from the cold waters of the Bering Sea down to the warmer waters of the Baja California peninsula to have their calves. The first ones to arrive are the pregnant ones and give birth in the warm waters of the lagoons. This annual round-trip migration is believed by scientists to be the longest made by any mammal on earth, totaling between 10,000 and 13,600 miles round trip.

Views from our hotel room

It was a cold, windy, and rainy morning on the day of our whale watching tour. We didn’t care because we were so excited to see these magnificent mammals in person. We hoped to be given the opportunity to pet a Grey Whale calf.

We rode in the boat to the bay

This is a small island in the bay that is popular with the birds.

Small island of variety of birds

Seals

Underwater the Grey whales look aqua in color. It is hard to describe how amazing it is to see them up close but even more incredible to touch them. It was a AWESOME experience! one we will never forget.

Video taken with our GoPro

Our time in San Carlos went so fast but we had a fantastic time here and will never forget our experience with the Grey Whales.

Time to hit the road. Next stop La Paz.
