San Ignacio, Baja California, Sur

We have crossed over from north to south Baja. About two miles north of our destination we went through another Military checkpoint. The military guys at checkpoints are usually young but do carry big guns. One of the 2 young military guys approached us at this checkpoint and said get out of our motorhome. We have been warned to watch the military guys and or the police closely when they board our vehicles and never leave them in our vehicle unattended. The opportunity to steal is great. I told them, they were welcome to board but we were not getting out. When I opened the motorhome door, again he said to leave the vehicle, I told him “no”. That same guy then boarded our motorhome while his partner stood by the stairs outside. The guy that boarded went to our bedroom and started going through our drawers. I stood close to him to watch. He found Rick’s small pocket knife, took it out of its holder, looked at it, laughed, and put it back in its holder, and placed it back in the drawer. Then he went to the cabinet above the bed and ran his hand through the folded sheets. He found the music box that Rick had purchased for me during our trip to Japan. He tried to take it out of the cabinet but fell onto our bed. I told him to be careful. He got up off the bed and walked to our bathroom. After checking out our medicine cabinet, he left the bathroom, headed to the living room where he opened 2 more overhead cabinets, said okay, and exited our vehicle. This was not like the other military checkpoints that we have experienced. Until today they normally pick one door to look into and a couple of living room overhead cabinets. Super easy, never have we been asked for ID or passports.

We arrived at an RV park called Rice and Beans Hotel and RV Park. It has a beautiful swimming pool, water was very cold. There is an onsite restaurant that has really good food, margaritas, and public wifi. We dry camped here for 2 nights which gave us time to explore the small but quaint downtown area.

The downtown area has several cute restaurants and shops. They do have one atm machine but it is hard to find.

The La Mision de San Ignacio is located here in the downtown area. The Mision was founded and financed in 1728 by Jesuit Father Juan Luyando (Mexican); the construction of the church was initiated by Jesuit Father Fernando Consag and Father Juan Crisostomo Gomez, he was the Dominican missionary who concluded that church approximately in 1786.

Time to hit the road. Next stop Mulege.
